We thought you might be curious to learn about the river itself, so here are 3 interesting things to know about the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River:
1. River Flows from Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Sevierville
The West Prong of the Little Pigeon River flows down from the scenic landscapes of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and runs down through Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville. The medium-to-large freestone stream is formed by the merge of Road Prong and Walkers Camp Prong near the Chimney Tops Trailhead in the National Park, and it essentially follows US Highway 441 from the park boundary all the way to Sevierville. At this point, it meets up with other branches to form the main stem of the Little Pigeon River.
2. Provides Excellent Fishing Opportunities
Another one of the interesting things to know about the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River is that it provides excellent fishing opportunities! The river is renowned for rainbow trout, brown trout and brook trout, with easy access points in the National Park and along local trails. Of course, you can enjoy fishing in the river at our campground just steps away from your campsite! The terrain along the river is also beneficial as it features rocky riverbeds, plunge pools and large boulders that create great pocket water for fly fishing.
3. Powers the Historic Old Mill in Pigeon Forge
The West Prong of the Little Pigeon River is an energy source too, as it powers the historic Old Mill in Pigeon Forge! Opened in 1830, this mill is one of the oldest operating grist mills in the country. It was originally built to grind corn, wheat, and oats for local farmers, but it also provided local area electricity from the early 1900s until 1930. Today the mill works just like it did back in the day, using a large exterior water wheel powered by the current of the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River to turn heavy millstones that crush corn and wheat into flour and cornmeal!
